[for Asher]

There was nothing more satisfying than the clink of handcuffs around a perp's wrists or the clang of the holding cell's door as it locked for the night. As much as Ray had complained about his job over the years, he had missed it far more than he'd realized on the Island. He'd now officially been Detective First Grade Raymond Vecchio for a little under two weeks and he already had two arrests under his belt. Joint arrests, on the same day for the same crime, but that didn't matter. It was quantity, not quality that mattered right now. Taking bad guys off the street, putting them away and heading home feeling like he'd done a good day's work, that he'd made the city a better place.

Today, home had had to wait for...Ray squinted at his watch as he fumbled with his door key. Four--what? Four hours. How was it nearly midnight already? He was fairly sure, even after a few drinks, that he'd clocked off work at 7pm, so how could it possibly be nearly the next day? Unconvinced of his watch's accuracy, he dug his cell phone out of his pocket, giving it a shake when a black screen gaped up at him. No battery.

The lock gave way with a click and Ray spent a few moments attempting to get the key out of it before stepping over the threshold with a grateful sigh. There was a special feeling that came with knowing he'd earned good money today, that he was providing for his family, for Asher's kids. Kids he hadn't seen since sometime yesterday morning because they'd already been in bed by the time he'd gotten home last night and he was out the door before they'd woken this morning. Work was work though. It put food on the table, clothes on their backs and maybe one or two drinks in Ray's hand tonight. Three max.

Two criminals behind bars, three or four drinks in him and a wage that would hit his bank account any day now. Nearly midnight or not, today really was a great day.

By the time he heard keys scraping the lock from his seat on the couch, Asher was already on his second cigarette. While he generally made a point of not smoking inside the apartment, he decided now was a good a time as any to make an exception. What choice did he have, really? With two sleeping kids in the next room, taking it outside was hardly an option.

Part of him hoped that Ray was stupid enough to make a fuss about it, to add fuel to the fire.

"I think you've got the wrong place. No one here called the cops."

Assuming Asher was cracking a joke for once, Ray huffed out a soft laugh through his nose. "You're up." He sounded genuinely pleased of the fact, tossing his keys on the side and elbowing the door shut. As an afterthought, he grabbed its handle to stop it from slamming too loudly and cast Asher a second, more considered glance.

"You know this place will stink of cigarette smoke in the morning, right?" Ray reminded him offhandedly as he toed off his shoes, approaching what he knew was a permanently sensitive issue in a less than direct manner.

"I wasn't sure if you'd be here come morning," Asher said, taping the ashes off the end of the cigarette into an ashtray beside him. "So I figures what the fuck." He shrugged.
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 6th, 2015 08:24 pm (UTC)
Mildly confused, Ray spent a few moments trying to double-guess Asher's meaning - as always - before giving up. "'Course I'd be here in the morning. Why wouldn't I be?" He asked curiously, heading for a glass of water and not hiding the fact he was wafting a hand in the air as he went. "Did you try calling? My phone's dead. I must've forgotten to charge it. You want a drink?"
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 7th, 2015 12:13 am (UTC)
"Why? I don't know, you tell me." Maybe for the same reason he was getting in at midnight with not so much as a peep about it beforehand, or any signs of being the least bit apologetic now.

Asher ignored the other questions, and the poor excuse of an excuse.

Ray took a few large gulps of water before even thinking about what to say to that. He'd known Asher long enough to recognize the standoffish, passive aggressive tone, which clearly meant he'd done something wrong.

"Are you mad I left early this morning?" He eventually replied, clutching the half-empty glass to his chest and hovering near the couch. He couldn't remember if he'd told Asher that the Captain was coming but regardless, Ray thought it should have been obvious that he was keen to make a good impression during his first few weeks.

"Do you want to be here, Vecchio?" Asher asked. Even if they weren't having this conversion at that hour, he would have still favored the direct approach over beating around the bush for who knew how long.

"Maybe not right this second," he clarified, knowing that being met with hostility seconds after stepping into the apartment probably wasn't the best welcome home he'd ever received. "In general. Do you want to be here?"
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 7th, 2015 10:19 pm (UTC)
Despite it being a highly effective interrogation technique, Ray personally hated being on the receiving end of it, when his questions were answered with further questions. He tried his best not to launch into a defensive response, taking his lead from Asher instead and keeping his cool.

Sitting on the arm of the couch, he scratched his chest a little tiredly, unsure where the conversation was going. "In Darrow?"
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 8th, 2015 12:26 am (UTC)
"Not Darrow." Asher's sure Ray preferred this place over the Island as much as he did. More so, considering the only thing he left behind was a Mountie. "Here," he repeated, jabbing a finger into the arm of the cough for emphasis. That apartment, that living arrangement, that relationship. All of it. "I kept my mouth shut at first as a courtesy for looking after them when I wasn't myself when I first got here. Courtesy's all run out."
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 8th, 2015 12:55 am (UTC)
Looking genuinely shocked to be asked that, Ray opened his mouth to answer, words taking an extra moment to start coming out.

"What? Of course I wanna be here, where else would I want to be?" As much as Ray was willfully ignoring the problems he was creating, he'd never once had any doubts about being with Asher. Those were long since dead.

"Is this because I didn't call tonight? Because I'm not lying, my phone really is out of power," he explained, digging it out and holding it out for Asher to check. "I had a really good day at work and celebrated a bit afterwards with some guys from the station. I hadn't planned to get back so late."
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 10th, 2015 06:41 pm (UTC)
"Like I said, you tell me."

He doesn't bother looking at the phone when it's offered because he didn't care about what it might tell him. It wouldn't change anything. A battery being drained one night wasn't going to explain whatever the hell was going on in Ray's head for the past however many months. "There's your excuse for tonight. And the rest? Even when you're here, you're not really. Not fully. So, I'll ask again: Do you want to be here?"
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 10th, 2015 08:53 pm (UTC)
Suddenly it felt like the beginning of a really important conversation and Ray was left wishing he wasn't starting it with a handful of drinks inside him in the middle of the night. It seemed like a dangerous approach given that neither of them usually needed any external factors to dissolve into an argument.

Lowering his arm with a sigh, Ray dropped off the edge of the couch and onto a cushion. "I do," he repeated, running a hand over his head. Asher wasn't wrong; even when Ray was home he was still so consumed with self-doubt that he had one foot permanently out the door. If he could figure out a way to change that, he would in a heartbeat. "Things are just different. But also the same," he added in frustration.
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 10th, 2015 09:23 pm (UTC)
Giving Ray an unimpressed look, Asher sighed and pushed himself up from the couch, hefting up his pants by his belt once upright. "Right... Well, you keep working on rejected fortune cookie fortunes or stitch that one onto a pillow or something," he suggested, picking up the ashtray and stamping out what was left of his cigarette. "I'm going to bed."
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 10th, 2015 09:54 pm (UTC)
"I'm trying to explain," Ray insisted, following Asher to his feet, arms held out in questioning. "You're gonna ask me a question like that then not listen to what I've got to say?"
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 10th, 2015 10:13 pm (UTC)
"I asked you a question, got my answer and the rest doesn't matter," Asher insisted, walking over to the garbage can and dumping out the contents of the ashtray before setting it onto the counter. "If you want to be here, be here. Get your shit together or don't. I've got two kids to take care of already, I'm not babying a third."
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 10th, 2015 10:30 pm (UTC)
"The rest does matter," Ray argued, following Asher with his gaze, too astounded to move from his spot by the couch. "You think I can get my shit together like that?" He asked, clicking his fingers. "I'm telling you I don't know how to do that."
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 10th, 2015 10:38 pm (UTC)
Clearly, they had a difference of opinion when it came to that, and if he hadn't been worried about waking the twins, Asher might have pushed back on the subject. "I think you need to figure it out," he said, hands braced on the counter top. "Fast. I can't do it for you."
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 10th, 2015 11:03 pm (UTC)
"Where the hell do I start?" Ray asked, blinking at Asher, shoulders shrugging helplessly. "Am I a father?"

It was a question he'd been scared to ask for five years but if he couldn't look Asher in the eye and do it right now, he never would. For a long time he hadn't know what he and Asher were and then one day he had a ring on his finger and it all made a bit more sense. No jewelry was going to make him feel like a good parent.
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 10th, 2015 11:32 pm (UTC)
"No...," Asher replied, wondering if he'd have to explain human reproduction before the night way up. "If you are, we've got even bigger problems than I thought." It might have explained why Ray was acting strangely, but Asher didn't actually think that was the case.

"I'm a father; I have fathered two, small, seemingly human creatures. You? You're... a dad." He shrugged, unsure why he even had to explain that.
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 11th, 2015 12:23 am (UTC)
"I'm a dad," Ray repeated, both relieved and terrified to hear it. Not an uncle, not a babysitter, not Baldman. Not some guy that just happened to live with their biological father.

When they'd arrived in Darrow and Ray had been faced with the possibility of raising the twins by himself, the thought had scared him far more than staring down the barrel of a gun. But he knew he would have done it. When Asher had come back, it was so much easier to step back again and pretend to be less than that. If he wasn't a dad, he couldn't turn into his dad.

He let out a rueful laugh through his nose. "I'm a frightened dad."
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 12th, 2015 03:30 pm (UTC)
Asher found his response confusing, but the question was just as puzzling, so maybe it was apt. "Congratulations, we have meetings every other Friday," he said in a dull monotone. What first time parent wasn't frightened? Granted, the first few months had been the scariest, but there's always something, even six years later.
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 12th, 2015 10:49 pm (UTC)
Ray was used to being met with sarcasm so he wasn't deterred by Asher's reply. In fact, he was still amused, though the laugh remained humorless.

"You know the ironic thing?" He asked, moving over to the kitchen counter to mimic Asher's stance. "Their mother is literally insane and their father," he continued, gesturing at him, "is a former vampire who has lived long enough to be their great-great-great-times-a-million grandfather and yet I'm still convinced that I'm the one that's gonna screw it up."

"Hitler's parents were human," he pointed out, eyes narrowed. "Got any other moronic attempts at psyching yourself up for the challenge to share or can I go to bed now?"
Ray Vecchio[personal profile] speakscanadian on May 15th, 2015 12:22 am (UTC)
"Yeah? You hang out with them or something?" Ray asked in response to what he deemed a flippant reply from Asher. "I'm having a crisis here and all you wanna do is sleep," he added in frustration, hitching his hands to his hips, body language telling Asher how unimpressed he was with him.
asher_talos[personal profile] asher_talos on May 15th, 2015 12:29 am (UTC)
"Sure, we're old tennis partners," Asher quickly shot back. "You don't know what a crisis is. You're having a pity party."
