Ray was determined to think bad of Asher. Luckily for him, things kept popping up to help him on his way.
A doctor with a wound on his neck and a sister that pointed him towards the ex-vampire was more than enough for him to go on. Inquiries, he told himself, was all he was making but he was desperate for more. A conviction. If he could prove Asher was bad to the bone, then everything would be fine and Ray could stop fixating on him.
He hadn't been able to pin the shooting on Asher, despite the hunch he still felt in his gut, the one that said Asher was guilty. So this, he wasn't going to let go so easily. Scanning each room he entered, Ray hunted for him, more aware of the cuffs on his belt than he had been since he'd arrived on the Island.

These days, his biggest opposition seemed to lie in one Ray Vecchio, who, as luck would have it, had just appeared between him and his exit.
If he was going to have to flip anyone off, Vecchio seemed like a near perfect choice.

Asher's raised wrist was swiftly surrounded by metal as Ray made a quick U-turn, pulling Asher's arm behind his back and reaching for the other one to cuff.
"Goooood afternoon, you're under arrest." He sounded absurdly chirpy. "Assault, causing actual bodily harm, before you ask." He wasn't about to tell Asher he couldn't press charges without a willing victim though; maybe with the ex-vamp in hold up, the good doctor would come to his senses and point the finger.

After the initial confusion wore off when all he could to was to stand there, wondering what the fuck Ray was playing at, Asher snapped to. If he was being arrested for causing actual bodily harm then he'd give him just that. Without the use of his fists, however, he settled for throwing his weight around.
While Ray was busy securing the second cuff, Asher twisted, shot backwards and slammed Ray back into the wall as hard as he could. "This makes it 'Assault, causing actual bodily harm' and resisting arrest, right? Have you lost your fucking mind?" He didn't need an answer. The fact that Ray was even attempting something like this was proof enough.
no subject
"Nah, I've finally come to my senses." He emphasised the word with a shove of his own, putting enough space between him and Asher for Ray to gather himself together again. "I suggest you do the same and do as your told for once." He hands went straight back to Asher's shoulders, in an attempt to frog-march the man in the general direction of the IPD office.
no subject
Wrists struggling against the cuffs, all he could think about was how easily he could have snapped the damn things if he were still a vampire. "Get these fucking things off of me." He was mindful to enunciate slowly for Ray's sake.
no subject
"What're you all looking at?" Ray yelled at the people watching. "You never seen a cop do his job before?"
no subject
"I thought I held grudges, but you're just fucking ridiculous." And the only reason Asher might have been going along a bit easier now was because he could easily throw the same kind of fit once they reached the office, only he didn't have to worry about all the gawking from bystanders once there.

When they reached the hallway, Ray gave him a few more shoves towards the IPD holding room door, reminding himself why they were here.
"Y'know, you got a lotta explaining to do." Keeping a hand on Asher's shoulder, Ray knocked open the door, revealing a table and a couple of chairs. "Now sit down!"
no subject
"You're the asshole parading the halls, slapping cuffs on people for no better reason than because you're bored. Or your ego is getting the better of you. You're the only one who can explain that," Asher said, glancing at the nearest chair before returning a defiant gaze to Ray and remaining standing.
no subject
Kicking the door shut behind him, Ray pointed at the closest chair. "I said si'down. Faster you do that, faster you get your say." Man-handling hardly counted as police brutality but the way Asher got him pent up, Ray probably wasn't far off.
no subject
He went as far as approaching the chair, but never intended to sit in it, opting instead to plant a foot on the seat and forcefully kicking it to the other side of the room. "Touch me again and it's your family jewels I'll be kicking."
no subject
He leaned back against the door. "Just tell me whether you bit Dr Cooper. Or if you want," he continued, patronising tone slipping into place, "I can put you in holding for a few hours so you can take a nap and get rid of that grizzly attitude."
no subject
"What the hell are you talking about? No, I didn't bite anyone. There's your answer, now let me the fuck go. You couldn't have asked out there?" He asked, nodding at the door. "Answer would have been the same."
no subject
Ray would've been a lot happier had Asher actually taken a seat. This felt far too personal. He widened his stance. "See, on the one hand, I got you, saying you haven't bitten anyone. And on the other, I have a doctor with puncture wounds in his neck and a...source who says you have motive and that I should be pointing the finger at you. So..."

Taking a step forward, Ray pulled out the spare chair - the one not currently toppled on its side in the corner of the room - and twisted it around to Asher. "Sit the hell down. I won't offer it again."
no subject
"I'll get over myself right after you do the same."
no subject
It didn't work. A second later he was crowding Asher up against the wall, getting in his face.
"You are really starting to piss me off," he hissed, his own teeth bared. Ray hardly had the patience of a sinner, let alone a saint.
no subject
"You're going to want to back up within the next thirty seconds," Asher said calmly despite the fact that his blood was boiling. "That's your second warning. You're not getting a third."
no subject
"Why? You wanna add assault of a police officer to the list?" His throat was a little scratchy from the growling but at least his gaze was back on blue eyes now. "You're ambitious. But go ahead." He held his hands up, cocking his head in provocation and getting closer, if that was possible. "You're also really goddamn stupid. There's a doc walking around with bite marks and then there's a schmuck like you walking around with the weapon right there in his mouth. Did you give him thirty seconds too? Hmm? Or wasn't he lucky enough to get a warning first?"
no subject
Asher wasn't stupid, or not in the way Ray assumed, at least. By then he knew who was likely responsible, even if the detective who probably had trouble detecting the giant nose on his own face didn't. There were plenty of former vampires on the island, but only three that he knew of who were still packing, so to speak. He was one, a member of the IPD was another, and his fucking sister was the third and most recent.
As pissed as he should have been at her, he'd done the same thing when he'd gotten his back. Apparently Stephen was good for something (not that he'd give him credit for it out loud), because none of this had happened when he was the victim.
"Did I say thirty?" Asher asked casually. Then, as promised, without any further warning, his knee shot up swiftly, connecting with Ray's crotch. "I meant twenty."
no subject
He doubled-over slowly, staggering back a few steps to grasp the edge of the table with his free hand. The other was glued to his crotch.
"Oh boy," he squeaked. "You've really gone and done it now."
no subject
"Doubt you were using that anyway. I'm still probably the closest you've come to getting any here and that was because I was possessed." Which Asher figured had something to do with the contempt. "You want a confession? Fine. I did bite someone. Stephen. Just the once, despite the fact that he flat out asked me to do it again, warped human being that he is. He'll deny that. I shot someone... something, technically. A bear. In my defense, it started it. Both were a million years ago and neither of them filed a report or pressed charges. Now, when you can stand up straight again I suggest you pull your head out of your ass and stop trying to make me your career making collar on the island."
no subject
Speaking of. Ray levered himself back upright and turned a furrowed gaze on Asher. "But Danica practically told me you'd done it. Sister and guy spend the night together, overbearing brother gets protective, guy gets it in the neck." Literally, in this case. "It's textbook."
no subject
Dr Cooper was the only reason Danica was still alive. Along with the fact that he wasn't Lew Ashby, that practically made him Asher's favorite person on the island, even if he never really went out of his way to express it.
"You might officially be the dumbest person I know. Congratulations."
no subject
Why would she lie? Most people did that to hide something. Like their own guilt.
"You're saying she did it. She bit Dr Cooper." His eyes narrowed. But why? Unless it was some sort of erotic thing that got out of hand. But then why cover it up by claiming it was an animal attack? The cogs turned in Ray's head and he stood a little straighter. "So I should be arresting her..."
no subject
Answer: no, of course not.
"You're a joke, and not even a mildly funny one. Who the fuck is running the IPD, anyway? Maybe their sense of humor is different than mine."

Ray turned to face the door and stared at it as if trying to remember what he was going to do.
Danica. Right.
"Stay here. I gotta go arrest your sister."
no subject
He sighed, back teeth grinding as he contemplated his next move. "Look... She did it, she didn't do it, I don't know. All I do know is how it worked when I got my fangs back. The instinct to bite came back with them, but it didn't stay. Frankly, you people all taste like shit and that's enough to stave off wanting to do it again."
no subject
"So you bit just the one person? Stephen?" He tilted his head, surveying Asher closely; every reaction, not matter how small, was noted. "One was enough and that was it?"
no subject
That didn't mean he wouldn't still shoot a person dead or beat them within an inch of their life, but it would take a hell of a lot for him to resort to using his fangs in that capacity as long as his taste buds were still human.
no subject
"Can you give me a personal guarantee that she'll never bite anyone?" Again, he added in his head but he was wise enough - and sore enough - to keep that part to himself. "Short of fixing a muzzle over her mouth, can you gimme that?"
no subject
no subject
With his free hand he began to reach into his pocket. "Guarantee?"
no subject
"We're both clear on the fact that I'm innocent, right? You keep these things on much longer and I'll be forced to assume it's not strictly for safety reasons." Not that they'd kept Ray very safe thus far. Just proof that they were completely unnecessary.
no subject
"No victim, no crime." His hand came out empty. "You seen the key anywhere?"
no subject

He stuck out a hand for the other man's wrists again. "C'mon. Haven't got all day."

Ray really wouldn't have been surprised if Asher was packing on a regular basis but for once, he didn't feel inclined to accuse him of that too.
no subject
A less intrusive pat-down would have revealed that he was armed, in fact, just as he always was, but he wasn't about to rub that in Ray's face. He had to save something for next time, because he was completely convinced that there would be a next time.
no subject
A stiff drink was what he wanted now but it looked more like he was going to hole himself up in the office for a couple of hours and try and figure out what had just happened.
He rubbed the heels of his hands into his eye sockets. "Say hi to your sister from me."
